Brought to you by hosts Maaike Smelter (NL Space Campus) and Martijn Leinweber (SBIC Noordwijk), there’s a new podcast on the block! Launched this month, Uncover Space will be exploring the programmes and organisations contributing to the Dutch space ecosystem. You can expect news, community updates, special guests and interesting – and fun – facts! There’ll be a new episode every month and the first one is now published. In it, we welcome guest Pedro Lacerda (ESA Phi-Lab NL). Listen on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.

The newest addition to the NL Space Campus is the Uncover Space podcast, that gets recorded on location in the SBIC Noordwijk space business hub every month. The idea to launch a podcast came one sunny day last year and the first episode was recorded earlier in February. And so it came to be and the buzz is palpable on the campus. Host Maaike Smelter commented after its recording: “Another “never thought I would but secretly dreamed of” thing ticked off – a first podcast with space community updates, special guests and space fun facts!”
First episode focuses on ESA Phi-Lab NL
This is just the first of many future episodes, produced by Amelie Finan (SBIC Noordwijk). Every episode will have a different theme/focus/guest and if you are curious to find out what you can expect from this very first one, we share some insights from the first guest and the focus of the episode: ESA Phi-Lab Netherlands.
The Netherlands has a very strong research expertise in the areas that our Phi-Lab focuses on
PEDRO LACERDA

Translating research into impactful solutions
The Phi-Lab “has the goal of helping transform ground-breaking research into sustainable commercial solutions that can have a big impact in our lives. So it’s trying to connect research that is being done at universities by really brilliant people, that usually stays in academic publications and never is translated into valuable commercial applications and impactful solutions. So this is what the Phi-Lab is trying to do, is to try to connect the two,” explains Pedro Lacerda.
“The Netherlands has a very strong research expertise in the areas that we’ve decided to focus our Phi-Lab on. So, we have universities that are very strong at using data from satellites, at working with laser satellite communications and working with geolocation information…We want to take advantage of that.” He continues: “There’s opportunity for the ideas to be converted into startups and new entrepreneurship. We also have very strong industry, space industry, based in the Netherlands, and those will be very happy to get breakthrough research converted into ideas that they can use in their business.”
