Companies benefit from several applications using EU Space data that translate into greener practices, and also in cost reductions and increased efficiency. The new report published by the EU Agency for the Space Programme (EUSPA) provides insights to support companies accelerate sustainability targets towards green transformation.
With climate change being one of the biggest challenges facing society today, industry is looking for new tools to help reduce environmental impact and guide its sustainability journey. According to a new report published by EUSPA, EU Space data and services can help.
Entitled “EU Space for Green Transformation,” the report showcases how Copernicus, the European Earth observation programme, Galileo, Europe’s Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), and EGNOS, Europe’s regional satellite-based augmentation system (SBAS), can all help companies become more sustainable.
Report: EU Space for Green Transformation
“The EU Space Programme plays a critical role in supplying the information companies need to monitor environmental indicators, reduce their environmental impact, become more sustainable and drive the green transformation,” said EUSPA Executive Director Rodrigo da Costa.
The report serves as a practical guide that companies can use to monitor sustainability targets. It includes detailed examples on using EU Space data and services for clean industry, construction and renovation, smart and sustainable mobility, a healthier and green food system, and restoring ecosystems and biodiversity. It also highlights the EU Space Programme’s role in supporting the shift to clean energy production and supply.
EU Space data supports the shift to renewable energy
EU Space can also help maintain renewable energy infrastructure. Drones are already using the precise positioning services offered by Galileo and EGNOS to, for example, remotely detect solar panel hotspots, which can reduce power generation, and inspect wind turbine structures.
“Whether it be increasing the efficiency of renewable energy infrastructure, enabling more efficient flightpaths or implementing precision agriculture operations, the cumulative environmental benefits enabled by the EU Space Programme are simply substantial,” added da Costa.
