Coming soon is the celebration of space in the Netherlands! This year with added extras: NL Space Week 2024 with its varied agenda of events, coincides with the Association of Space Explorers congress and the final of NL Moonshots ’24.
Alongside the various open days of ESA/ESTEC, Leiden Old Observatory and SRON Netherlands Institute for Space Research, the space week also shines a spotlight on the importance of Earth observation (EO) for the planet, society and the economy. With 2 days of EO programming, including events in The Hague on 2 Oct and at SBIC Noordwijk on 3 Oct. And don’t miss your chance to join the NL Space Campus Network & Drinks XL Edition at Space Expo.
Uncover the potential of Dutch space activities
The third edition of NL Space Week 2024 will take place from 29 September to 6 October at various locations across the Netherlands. Across the course of all the various events, the Dutch space sector opens its doors to the public, enabling people of all ages to uncover space and its vast potential. The 8-day programme includes a broad set of unique experiences on exclusive locations in the Netherlands, such as the well-known ESA/ESTEC Open Days including Space Expo, both located on the NL Space Campus in Noordwijk. Moreover, the open days SRON and the Old Observatory take place in Leiden and last but not least: 70+ international astronauts are visiting the Netherlands as part of the ASE Planetary Congress 2024. Whether you’re a student looking for career opportunities, come with your whole family or want to join as a company: there is space for everyone.
Fuelling Earth observation for impact
The first ever Space Investor Event to be held at SBIC will take place on Thu 3 Oct during NL Space Week 2024, organised by NL Space Campus, SBIC Noordwijk and KplusV. This will see tech startups intent on making an impact while utilising Earth observation data matched with top investors and innovative ventures in the space sector. See our earlier article here.
This event will be the conclusion of 2 days of EO programming during this year’s NL Space Week showcasing the impact of Earth observation and space data on science, society and the economy. The schedule is designed to strengthen the downstream segment by inspiring further activities to use Earth observation data in novel ways and two of the additional highlights of the schedule include:
• Wed 2 Oct – Space for Food Security | Location: The Hague
(organised by NSO and RVO Partners for Water)
This event will mark the conclusion of the Geodata for Agriculture and Water (G4AW) programme, which began in 2013 and will officially end in late 2024. It will be a time to reflect on more than a decade of digital innovations, entrepreneurship and international cooperation, where the Earth observation community has made significant contributions to global challenges in agriculture, water management and climate. It is also chance to celebrate the collaboration with the wider engaged network and look forward to exploring new developments and opportunities for the use of EO and other (space) technologies. G4AW is a programme by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs within the policy priorities for food security and water, which is executed by the Netherlands Space Office (NSO).
• Thu 3 Oct – Earth Observation for Impact | Location: SBIC Noordwijk
(organised by NL Space Campus, ITC faculty of the University of Twente and NSO)
This event focuses on academia, industry and end-users to utilise the latest developments in EO research and applications. The EO4Impact event will connect all the various stateholders who can benefit from the state-of-the-art EO products and applications in achieving a greater impact. The agenda will highlight diverse perspectives and work towards common goals with clear objectives.
